2024/25 Football Season Review

Introduction

With the new football season on the horizon, it’s the perfect moment to rewind and celebrate the sharpest strikers in Europe and relive the moments that defined last season’s drama.

Premier League

Salah's Record-Breaking Season

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah capped off his season in sensational fashion, becoming only the third player to hit 47 goal involvements in a season, with 29 goals and 18 assists, equalling Alan Shearer and Andy Cole. Although Salah achieved his total in 38 games, 4 less than Shearer and Cole. Remarkably, Salah became the first player in Premier League history to claim the Player of the Season, Playmaker of the Season and Golden Boot awards all in the same campaign.

Haaland's unusual goal drought

After a blistering start to the season – netting back-to-back hat-tricks against Ipswich and West Ham – Erling Haaland found himself in uncharted waters, a goal drought spanning three consecutive gameweeks, beginning with a trip to Newcastle in Gameweek 6.

As City’s form dipped, so did Haaland’s. In a shocking November collapse, they slumped to four consecutive league defeats against Bournemouth, Brighton, Tottenham, and Liverpool. This marked their worst domestic run since the tail end of the 2005/06 season, when they lost to Fulham, Arsenal and Blackburn, then opened the following season with a 3-0 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

During this turbulent spell, Haaland managed just one goal – in a 2-1 loss to Brighton – marking the first time he had scored in a Premier League match that City went on to lose.

With the club finishing the season without silverware for the first time since Pep Guardiola’s inaugural campaign in 2016/17, urgency has returned to the Etihad. Ahead of the 2025/26 season, City have moved quickly in the transfer market, bringing in Rayan Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Ait-Nouri to bolster their ranks.

Cold Palmer: Blowing Hot and Cold

Cole Palmer’s September was the stuff of dreams, capped by a remarkable four-goal haul against Brighton. But as 2024 wrapped up, as did Palmer’s midas touch in front of goal. Between January and April, Palmer went 12 games without scoring, contributing only three assists over 1,080 minutes on the pitch.

Isak's Big Moment:From Newcastle Glory to Liverpool Rumours

Alexander Isak has written himself into Newcastle folklore – finishing second in the Premier League scoring charts with 23 goals and helping end the club’s 56-year wait for a trophy. Now, with strong speculation linking Isak with a move away from St James’s Park, with Liverpool leading the potential suitors. For Arne Slot, Isak looks like the perfect fit in an attack-minded setup that’s already been reinforced with the arrivals of full-backs Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, as well as creative midfielder Florian Wirtz.

Brentford's Dynamic Duo: Mbeumo & Wissa

Bryan Mbeumo & Yoane Wissa lit up Brentford’s attack this season, combining for 39 goals – a staggering 59.1% of the team’s total. Their on-field partnership was undeniable, directly linking up for 7 goals in league play, showcasing their instinctive connection.

Mbeumo has already been snapped up by Manchester United and Wissa is heavily linked with a move away. We hope Brentford fans enjoyed the pair last season.

La Liga

Mbappé's Debut Season

Kylian Mbappé’s debut season at Real Madrid was nothing short of exceptional, netting 31 goals to win both the Pichichi Trophy and the European Golden Boot. In doing so, Mbappe broke the club’s record for goals in a debut season, eclipsing Ivan Zamorano’s long-standing mark from 1992/93.

Despite his individual brilliance, Madrid fell short collectively, finishing second in the league. It was a stark reminder that in football, no matter how bright one star shines, it takes a whole constellation to win titles.

Mbappé’s presence became increasingly dominant as the season wore on. At the midpoint, it was Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski leading the golden boot race with 16 goals, with Raphinha not far behind on 11, but when it mattered most, Mbappé rose to the occasion – a gameweek 35 El Clasico hat-trick saw him leap past Lewandowski and stamp his mark on the title race.

Mbappé carried a significant load for Real Madrid, scoring 39% of their La Liga goals. In contrast, Barcelona and Atlético Madrid thrived through more collective firepower. Lewandowski and Raphinha shared the attacking burden at Barca, combining for 44% of the team’s goals. At Atlético, Julián Álvarez and Alexander Sørloth proved vital to Simeone’s game plan, contributing over half (54%) of the club’s total goals.

Dembélé Edges Greenwood for the Ligue 1 Golden Boot

Ousmane Dembélé and Mason Greenwood finished the Ligue 1 season level on 21 goals each, but it was the PSG winger who claimed the Golden Boot, edging out Greenwood thanks to a lower number of penalties scored.

Dembélé’s season wasn’t just about topping the Ligue 1 scoring charts – it was a campaign of brilliance on every front. He played a vital role in guiding PSG to their first-ever UEFA Champions League triumph, earning him both the UCL Player of the Season and Ligue 1 Player of the Season. With silverware, stats, and standout performance behind him, Dembélé is now the clear front-runner for the 2025 Ballon d’Or.

Jonathan David's Farewell to Lille and Move to Juventus

Jonathan David ended his Lille chapter on a high note, scoring 16 goals in his final season. He made the switch to Juventus, where he’ll link up with Dusan Vlahovic in a promising attacking duo. His arrival comes just as Randal Kolo Muani’s loan deal expires, paving the way for the latter’s return to PSG this June.

Lacazette's Departure Amid Lyon's Financial Turmoil

Alexandre Lacazette’s free transfer from Lyon to Saudi Side Neom (The area in Saudi Arabia that has the Line) came at a critical moment for the club. Lyon initially faced administrative relegation to Ligue 2 due to severe financial issues, including debts estimated at €175 Million and a bloated wage bill. Lacazette’s departure was part of a wider push to slash costs and regain financial control.

In a dramatic twist, Lyon’s fortunes changed on July 9, 2025. The club successfully overturned their administrative relegation after presenting a compelling recovery strategy under new leadership. The french football financial watchdog (DNGG) was persuaded to lift the demotion, allowing Lyon to remain in Ligue 1. The decision not only safeguarded their top-flight status but also confirmed their spot in next season Europa League, earned through a hard-fought sixth-place finish.

Mika Birth: Monaco's Late-Season Revelation

Mika Biereth’s rise was one of the season’s most compelling stories. After joining AS Monaco from Arsenal in January 2025, the young striker wasted no time making his mark – scoring 13 goals in just 16 games. February was especially explosive, as he bagged three hat-tricks in quick succession against Auxerre, Nantes and Reims. In just a few months, Biereth not only broke into Ligue 1’s top scorer ranks but also signalled the arrival of a new star at Les Monégasques.

Harry Kane's Prolific Streak Continues

Harry Kane continues to carve his name into Bundesliga history. The Bayern Munich forward claimed the Kicker-Torjägerkanone for the second year running, finishing the season with 26 goals – making him the first player ever to win the Bundesliga Golden Boot in each of his first two seasons. While his total was just below the 2023/24 season, it was more than enough to fend off his rivals and reinforce his status as Bayern’s undisputed goal-scoring talisman.

Omar Marmoush's Promising but Momentary Bundesliga Spell

Omar Marmoush took the Bundesliga by storm before his January 2025 move to Manchester City, 6 goals in his first 5 games. He instantly thrust himself into the top scorer conversation. By gameweek 17, he had already bagged 15 goals – nearly double the tally of Hugo Ekitike, his fellow Frankfurt striker with 8. After Marmoush’s departure, Frankfurt’s firepower waned. In a surprising twist, Ekitike closed the gap and finished the season level with 15 goals.

When both players featured together, it was clear who carried the greater attacking threat. Marmoush delivered 13 goals and 8 assists, while Ekitike managed 8 goals and 3 assists. Their connection was evident, Marmoush set up four of Ekitike’s goals, while Ekitike assisted just one in return .

Atalanta’s Mateo Retegui claimed the Capocannoiere award as Serie A’s top scorer with 25 goals, capping off a breakout campaign by guiding his team to Champions League qualification. Scott McTominay: Serie A's MVP

Scott McTominay couldn’t have asked for a better debut season at Napoli, with 12 goals and a commanding presence in midfield. McTominay was the driving force behind the club’s Scudetto triumph, linking up superbly with Romelu Lukaku. His efforts were recognised with the Serie A Best Overall Player award – the league’s MVP. Interestingly, league rules meant McTominay couldn’t also be named Best Midfielder, as the overall MVP isn’t eligible for any position-specific honours. Still, his leadership and consistency helped Napoli edge out Inter Milan by just one point to claim their second title in three years.

The Tight Race Among Italy's Top Teams

The title race between Napoli and Inter Milan went down to the wire, with just a single point separating the two sides in the final standings. Their leading scorers – Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez for Inter, and Romelu Lakaku and Scott McTominay for Napoli – combined for 26 goals, highlighting the crucial role of shared attacking responsibility in the pursuit of the Scudetto.

Remarkably, his tally surpassed the combined total of the bottom three players in the league’s top 10. However, despite his prolific form, Gyökeres was ineligible for the European Golden Boot, which is awarded exclusively to players competing in Europe’s top five leagues.
