Root & Rise

Born in 2007 to a Moroccan father and an Equatoguinean mother, Lamine Yamal is a symbol of the rich cultural blend. Raised in the outskirts of Barcelona, his football journey began at La Masia, FC Barcelona’s legendary academy known for shaping some of the game’s greatest minds. From an early age, Lamine stood out, not just for his natural flair and audacious technique, but for his maturity, intelligence, and confidence on the pitch. La Masia didn’t just refine his talent; it instilled in him the values of creativity, positional play, and collective intelligence. His North African heritage and Catalan football education together formed a unique blend, giving him an unpredictable style that mirrors both street football spontaneity and tactical precision. At just 18, he doesn’t just represent the future, he is redefining what we expect from it.

Lamine Yamal made his official debut for FC Barcelona on April 29, 2023, against Real Betis at just 15 years old, becoming the youngest player to appear for the club in a La Liga match. Coming on as a late substitute, he showed flashes of confidence, flair, and maturity far beyond his years. In just a few minutes, he nearly scored and even forced a save, offering a glimpse of the bold, creative style that would quickly make him one of football’s most exciting young prospects.

Why Do We Love Lamine?

In recent years, as football tactics have evolved alongside the rise of data analytics, it has become increasingly rare to find players who aren’t strictly bound to a system. In today’s game if you are playing under the tactical genius Pep Guardiola, you must commit to a specific role within the structure of positional play. There is little room for improvisation or risk; you either execute your function with discipline or find yourself on the sidelines.

Yet, football fans have always loved the risk-takers, the players who dare to dribble through tight spaces, cut inside and unleash a long-range strike regardless of its xG value, or attempt an audacious pass that could unlock a defence, even if it means losing the ball. That’s exactly why we love Lamine Yamal. He brings the kind of fearless creativity that reminds us why we fell in love with the game in the first place. Let’s turn to the data to see whether it backs up the idea that Lamine is truly a risk-taker.

Yamal’s 2024/2025 Season La Liga Shot Map

Shot Location & Patterns

Nearly all of Lamine Yamal’s shots come from the right side of the pitch, including 8 of his 9 goals. A significant number are taken from just outside the box, often as he cuts in from the right wing onto his stronger left foot, even when shooting from inside the box, he tends to strike from tight angles on that same side. As a result of risking and attempting a lot of low quality chances with an average of 0.08 xG/Shot, he has underperformed his xG of 11.59, scoring 2.59 goals fewer than expected.

Comparing Lamine Yamal’s xG per shot to La Liga’s top five goal scorers in the 2024/25 season highlights the clear gap in shot quality. Despite being second only to Kylian Mbappé in total shots attempted with just 17 fewer, Lamine lags significantly behind in efficiency. Mbappé, who claimed the Golden Boot with 31 goals, recorded the lowest xG per shot among the top 5 scorers, yet his average was still 2.3 times higher than Lamine’s. Notably, Lamine attempted more shots than the other four players in the top five, including his own teammate Robert Lewandowski. But what if instead of looking at all of the shots, we only look at only the shots of which the goals were scored?

On average, Lamine Yamal’s xG per shot for his goals was just 0.08, remarkably low compared to the other top scorers, whose averages were 4 to 6 times higher. This suggests that Lamine often scores from difficult, low-probability positions, highlighting his tendency to shoot and occasionally score from tight angles or long distances which fans love to see.

Let’s take a closer look at some of Yamal’s goals to understand what makes them so special.

With the match still level, Lamine Yamal broke the deadlock with a stunning strike from outside the box, a goal that came from a low-quality chance due to both the long distance and the sheer congestion in front of him. Remarkably, there were seven opposing players between him and the goal including the goalkeeper, yet he managed to find the net with precision and power, giving the Catalans the lead.

With the score locked at 0–0 in the decisive Barcelona derby against Espanyol, a match Barça had to win to secure the La Liga title, Lamine Yamal found himself in a tight shooting situation but still decided to take the risk. With a defender closing the angle and the goalkeeper well-positioned, the only way the ball was reaching the net was a perfectly placed shot into the top corner. And that’s exactly what he delivered.

Lamine Yamal winds up amidst a sea of yellow shirts packed inside the penalty area, with one sliding in to block. His body posture doesn’t scream goal, the angle looks tight, and the goalkeeper is well-positioned. Yet, in true Yamal fashion, he unleashes a strike through traffic and finds the net. A goal from nothing. Instinctive, fearless, and utterly brilliant.

Barça are trailing by one goal against their biggest rivals, Real Madrid, in El Clásico at Montjuïc, surrounded by their home fans. A Madrid win would close the gap to just one point in the title race. Ferran spots the 17-year-old Lamine in his favorite position and feeds him a short pass. Without hesitation, Lamine unleashes a shot despite Madrid’s defenders and keeper being well-positioned, a perfect swirl on the ball sends it into the net. Once again, the bold 17-year-old proves he’s built for the big moments.

Some might argue that Lamine needs to be more efficient and focus on higher-quality chances, since every missed shot ultimately means a lost opportunity which is a valid point from a tactical perspective. Yet, as football fans, we crave the creative, agile player who drives the system forward rather than being confined by it.

Now, let’s examine whether there’s a pattern in Lamine’s highest xG missed chances to better understand what aspects of his finishing could be improved.

Out of these 10 shots, the 17 years old was expected to score 3.66 goals but ended up scoring nothing.

Barcelona 1 - 0 Rayo Vallecano | xG: 0.41

Rayo Vallecano’s defender attempted to clear the cross with a header, but it fell into open space where Lamine reacted quickest. His shot went straight into the goalkeeper’s path missing to score from a relatively easy opportunity.

Following a missed one-on-one by the Polish striker, the rebound unexpectedly fell to Lamine Yamal’s feet. Caught off guard with little time to react, he attempted a shot while off-balance and falling, sending the effort wide. A quicker reaction from the 17-year-old might have turned this into a goal.

Lamine’s Shots Breakdown by Shot Type

As much as we admire Lamine Yamal’s magical dribbling with his left foot, his potential could reach another level if he develops confidence with his right. Last season, 89% of his shots came from his left foot, with only a small fraction taken with his right and just one header all season. Relying so heavily on one foot can limit attacking options, especially in tight spaces or on the weaker side of the pitch. A perfect example of this came against Mallorca, where a quicker right-footed shot could’ve easily turned into a goal.

Yamal received a long pass from his teammate and found himself in a prime shooting position — close to goal with no defenders blocking his path. However, instead of taking the shot with his right foot, he opted to turn onto his favored left, allowing the defender enough time to recover and intercept the chance.

Improving his right foot and becoming more clinical in high xG situations could be the final step that propels Lamine Yamal to the top of the scoring charts in seasons to come. At 17 years old, he’s already delivered in the biggest moments: scoring the equalizer in El Clásico under the immense pressure of a title race, firing in a screamer in the Barcelona derby that effectively sealed the league, and leading his team to the UEFA Champions League semi-final against Inter even though that campaign ended in elimination in Milan. Lamine’s boldness, maturity, and match-winning instinct at such a young age are exactly why fans have fallen in love with him. He’s not just talented, he’s fearless.

What Next For Lamine?

The thought that Lamine Yamal will only be 22 by the time the 2030 FIFA World Cup kicks off is mind-blowing. We’ve seen countless young talents burst onto the scene with promise, only to fade under the weight of expectation. Becoming a global football star as a teenager is rare but staying at that level for a decade, like Messi and Ronaldo did, is an even greater challenge. The hope is that Lamine not only continues to rise but finds the consistency and mindset to sustain greatness over the long run.

Lamine Yamal’s boldness isn’t limited to the pitch, it extends off it as well. We’ve seen him share subtle, indirect messages on social media following certain matches or incidents, hinting at a personality that isn’t afraid to speak between the lines. While behind-the-scenes drama often adds intrigue for fans, too much focus off the field can become a distraction and invite unnecessary criticism over time. Whether this is a phase or a defining part of Yamal’s character remains to be seen, something only time will reveal.
